What started off as a joke between two mates soon turned into a sport that I love.
Back in late 2005 a mate and I went to the Wanganui Cycling Club for an open day experience on the track.  At the time I had no idea that cycling would become the sport of my choice.
Before I knew it I had a coach ‘Lyal Hastie’ and was part-taking in a vigorous training regime.  The following year 2006 saw a lot of benefits for my efforts and with weight loss and fitness gain, Lyal coached me to 3 Gold, 2 Silver, 1 Bronze medal and 2 Cups between track and road racing.
Now I really new I had the bug, which led to more training more weight loss and more medals and cups for 2007 – I also qualified for the New Zealand Track Cycling Nationals in Invercargill where I gained 3 Silver Medals for 500TT, 750m Derby & the 8km Points race.  Invercargill was a great learning curve and an awesome experience.  I also placed 6th in the 2007 road champs held in Auckland.
I have a new coach for 2008 Gary Anderson who has an immense amount of knowledge and experience.  I am really looking forward to next track season and am hunting for Gold.
My mother didn’t do a good job when it came to picking my date of birth – I am now 14 and riding with under 17grade – I knew the first year competing with under 17’s will be my most challenging and I can only gain from this experience.
My passion is track cycling because there is more opportunity to sprint and I love the fast pace and quick results.  I am currently sponsored by Phil Cooper Imports whom supply me with all my Sports Balm, PVM and Energy Dynamics products – which have played a big roll in my performance and recovery.
I look forward to continuing my cycling career and hope that 2008 will return more positive results.  All this would have not been achievable without the support from my family and friends.

sub 2009.jpgAfter playing for a successful woman’s soccer team where I represented the Wanganui region for three years, I decided to change sporting codes to cycling towards the end of 2005.

I started by doing the weekly spin classes and Saturday afternoon race.    My first out of town cycling event was the 2007 Tour of Rangitikei in Hunterville where I was placed in the top 10.

This was my first taste of serious competition other than my regular club races. I then raced in the 2007 Tour de Manawatu where I was 3rd female home and placed 38th overall out of a field of 404 entrants.  2008 saw me riding further away from home races starting with the Sarah Ulmer Ride or Stride series in Palmerston North over a distance of 65 kms. Out of the 73 competitors I finished in 5th place.

Highlights for 2008 have been riding the Tour of  Wairarapa and finishing 15th and riding Taupo for the first time.  2008 also saw me being coached under Noel Anderson for both track and road.

T.A tour followed by the CRI Rotorua Junior tour the next weekend, were a focus for me at the beginning of the year. A great experience riding against a large field or experienced rider. Winning the 2009 SUB series in Wairarapa was a highlight for the year. At the WCNI i won the silver medal in the 200m sprint final. Racing in Tauranga, i took 2nd place in a field where i was the only woman. My new focus for the track season will be to qualify for the 2010 Track Nationals held in Invercargill early next year, followed by the 2010 National Road Champs held in Hawkes Bay.

GEOFF HUCKER

huckerphoto.jpgAfter 25 years of yacht racing ,windsurfing and over indulging in a lazy life style it was time for a change a big change in life style. Reason for change; I had reached 130 kilos!! So in December 1993 I sold my yacht and bought a mountainbike and started riding to and from work. I soon changed to a roadbike and have never been the same since. Thank god.!!

In August 1994 I joined the Wanganui Cycling Club and competed in my first race over 36 kms

What a buzz, what a learning curve ,well 30 new roadbikes later and god knows how many sets of new wheels and I’m still cycling and intend carrying on.

Eight months after starting cycling I was down to 75 kilos. I currently hold the following positions with the club: BarManager, Barman, Recycler, and committee member/event organizer.

I still get a huge buzz from cycling and race occasionally in the recreational grade and help/ encourage our new members of all ages with their learning and training.

My biggest delight is helping our talented younger riders reach their full potential by assisting Lyall Hastie and Adam Hamlin with their young charges. Hell I’ve even been known to buy a  new wheel or two for one or more of the young chargers to use at nationals.

What will I be doing in the future ?

I hope to still be riding my bike at 78 years plus (like our hero and Club patron Bill Main)and still doing what I can to help the young ones;  being on the other side of the bar for a change having a drink … and chewing the fat with the other members while recalling stories about past and present  members and events.!!

I can be contacted by phone at 344 2144 (evenings)

or if you want to chew the fat my address is 61 polson street in beach suburb of castlecliff.
