At our last Committee meeting, I suggested starting a 'Coaching Corner' on our Clubs Website, which will in time be revamped. All Committee members approved of this idea so here I am!
I have recently attended two BIKENZ HP led Coaching Courses in conjunction with the UCI, this takes me to Senior Coaching Level 2. My intention is to, over a period of time, supply club members with relevant ideas/information on various issues/areas within cycling.
This is intended for those riders who are new to cycling who need general guidance on say what to eat or what sort of training mileage riders should be doing for say a 40km ride/race or ride the Taupo ride or how to cope with weekly races at the weekends.
We do need your feedback on this idea, whether this type of guidance is required to be placed on the web site or not, or through regular emails or just on the Notice Boards.
NB.
It is important to remember that those riders that do wish to pass on info or tips please go through either Noel or myself first, just so that theres no conflicting information. It is important that the right advice is provided to those riders who are not in the know.
For the moment, I have attached information on Nutrition as I feel this is what makes us able to train properly. Not eating properly or enough of the right foods, will lead to poor performances.
Local Wanganui Cycling Club riders shine in West Coast North Island Track team at Nationals, Invercargill.
While Elite Track riders like Jessie Sergent and Allison Shanks break NZ records, our local riders who are part of the WCNI team are also beating their personal best times at the Invercargill covered Velodrome.
Matthew Noble won the Silver medal in the 500m time trial and has made the finals in the sprint final and has every chance of winning another medal. Unfortunately due to a huge crash in the point’s race on Wednesday night, involving a number of riders and with points up Nobles sleeve, Noble was taken out and was unable to complete the race.
Natalie Kirwin who was unlucky to miss out on a medal by one point and was placed 4th in the U19 Points race has been one of the stars in the group according to WCNI helpers at the event. Kerwin, who is relishing the indoor centre, is consistently beating her personal best times.
Kayla Reardon who was placed 5th in her grade in the 500m time trial final has beaten her (PB) by over 3 secs. Katie O’Neil who had a rough start at the beginning of the week, with her wheels being delayed in flight, has also beaten her (PB) in the races Katie has been in.
Cassie Cameron, has qualified in the top 8 sprint with a strong ride to qualify for the quarter finals yet to come.
Brei Gudsell who by far is racing in the hardest section, the elite women, competing against Alison Shanks will now know what she will have to do in the future, but is still in the middle of the pack at the finishing line.
Other riders in the WCNI team are from New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Stratford and Levin who regularly train and compete at the Wanganui Velodrome are also in the medals lists.

Young Wanganui cyclist and junior club captain of the Wanganui Cycling Club, Victoria Cate took out the Molenberg Sub Series in Martinborough on Sunday 15th February taking line honours from Jo Doherty Wellington 2, Helen Mumby PN 3 and Suzanne Charles PN 4.
117 riders lined up to contest the 69km course in cold and windy conditions. Hills and headwind eventually took its toll on the leading bunch as Doherty made a break on the hill closely followed by Cate and Charles.
The leading group of three picked up the pace and rode away from Charles with 10km to go.
Tight cornering to the finish line gave Cate an advantage, crossing in first place after a close sprint winning in a time of 1hr 59m to take home the yellow jersey.
The Molenberg Sub Series, currently in its sixth year is sponsored by Molenberg & Sarah Ulmer Brand and travels to six New Zealand towns offering walking, running, half marathon and cycle races.
